Time Frame Series by Julian Oteyza

Statement:
At the end of 2005, Julian Oteyza traveled to Hawaii and found a connection to his Filipino heritage. An outgrowth of rekindling his appreciation of growing up in the Philippines is his new series, “Time Frames” which is displayed as film clips of Philippine heritage. By the end of 2006, this very important Centennial year, Julian will have completed 100 paintings, his homage to the country of his birth offering the viewer a visual representation of the vibrant culture Filipinos brought to the United States 100 years ago. If you were born in the Philippines; lived there; or have visited, this series offers you an opportunity to rekindle warm memories of everyday life. If you have never experienced the beauty of everyday life in the Philippines, this series offers you a glimpse of paradise through the lens of Julian Oteyza.

Julian's Bio

Julian Oteyza was born in the Philippines where he was visually stimulated by the brilliantly hued flora and fauna native to the forests of Baguio and the streets of Manila where he was raised. Inspired by his father, Victor Oteyza (one of the neo-realists of the 1950’s in the Philippines) Julian graduated from University of Santo Thomas with a degree in Fine Arts. Julian life’s work has been to share his experience and perception with others through art, music and invention. His work is kinetic in nature offering an interactive visual, emotional and physical opportunity with you, the viewer. Julian’s fascination with science, invention and energy led him to create Rotating Perspectives, Dyslexart, Emerging Dimensions, Light Wave Reflections and his latest series in commemoration of the Philippine Centennial. While each series offers a variety of abstract and vividly hued images, the constant in all of Julian’s work is that there is no wrong way to view or interpret the art. You will see layers of a visual history creatively designed to tell a story and resonate with the viewer’s memories. This latest series was inspired by a visit to Hawaii in 2005 and celebrates 100 years of the Philippine presence in America drawing from Julian’s memories of games he played as a child, through the arrival of the Secadas in Hawaii and to the current memories he facilitates for artists and children in the Washington metropolitan area.
In 2003, Julian received the first Art and Culture Dakila (Hero) award established and presented by the Philippine-American Foundation for Charities, Inc. in recognition for his work in establishing the Brown Strokes traveling art exhibit and his mentoring work with the annual children’s art contest during the Philippine Festival. Julian is President and a long standing member of the Board of Directors for the International Artists Support Guild, a member of the Museum of Contemporary Art, former vice president of Philippine Art Media and Letters, (PALM), (SPAA) Society of Philippine-American Artists in New York, co-founder of Tutubi Productions, a group devoted to mentoring art and artists of all media and sharing artistic expression with the community at large, and a regular participant in the Angel Orensanz Foundation’s International art competitions. He lives and works in Arlington, Virginia and has exhibited throughout the Washington metropolitan area; Florida; Atlanta; Georgia; New York; Paris; Italy; India; Egypt; and has upcoming shows in Manila where he plans to exhibit his traveling father and son show, The Czech Republic, Argentina, Panama City and Peru.
